Residential vs. ISP vs. datacenter proxies: which one do you actually need?

Jul 22, 2026 2 min read

Every proxy pitch says "we have the best IPs." That's not a useful way to choose. What matters is which network your target site trusts, and how much you're willing to pay for that trust.

Residential: the default for anything consumer-facing

Residential IPs come from real home internet connections. To the site you're hitting, your request looks identical to a person browsing on their laptop. That's why residential is the go-to for scraping retail sites, social platforms, and anything with aggressive anti-bot systems β€” the trust score is as high as it gets, but you pay for it per GB and speeds vary with the underlying home connection.

ISP: residential trust, datacenter stability

ISP (static residential) proxies are hosted in a datacenter but registered to an ISP's IP block, so they carry residential-grade trust without the variability of a real home connection. You get a consistent, dedicated IP that doesn't rotate under you mid-session β€” useful for account management, ad verification, and anything where you need the same identity across many requests.

Datacenter: cheap and fast, but easier to flag

Datacenter IPs are the fastest and cheapest option by a wide margin, billed per IP rather than per GB. The tradeoff is that datacenter ASN ranges are well known, so sites with real anti-bot tooling can and do block entire ranges. It's the right call for high-volume, low-sensitivity targets: internal APIs, sites with light protection, or anywhere raw throughput matters more than stealth.

A simple way to decide

  • Scraping a site with real anti-bot protection (retail, social, ticketing) β†’ residential
  • Managing accounts or sessions that need a stable identity β†’ ISP
  • Hitting lightly-protected or internal targets at high volume β†’ datacenter
  • Not sure? Start on residential, then move traffic to ISP or datacenter once you know a target tolerates it

Most teams end up running two pools side by side β€” residential for the sensitive stuff, datacenter for everything else β€” and switching per-request is just a matter of changing the type in your username string, no separate integration required.
